Note: This is a series I call Caveman Beer Reviews, because I like to drink beer but am a caveman when it comes to beer knowledge. I know only the basics, and do not have a refined palate. I’ll review the beers on price and what they look, smell, and taste like to me.

Beer: Funky Buddha Sweet Potato Casserole Strong Ale

Bottom Line: A bizarre but very good beer that indeed tastes like sweet potatoes.

Price: About $11.99 for a 4-pack of 12 ounce bottles.

My Rating: 4 out of 5

Details

I bought this one of out irresistible curiosity. After all, what on earth is a sweet potato casserole beer? That’s like a lasagna beer to me. So, when I saw this at the store, I just could not contain myself and bought it. Luckily, it was at Trader Joe’s, which lets you pick up individual bottles. I only got one, because it’s crazy expensive.

A sweet potato cake. Close enough?

Origin: Oakland Park, Florida. If you’re ever there, be sure to stop by Greek Islands Taverna, one of the best Greek restaurants on planet earth. Get the octopus and lamb chops. TRUST ME.

Alcohol: A rocking 7.9%!

Looks: A cool beer bottle with some marshmallow-y beings about to get tossed into a sweet potato casserole. The beer itself is a dark amber color.

Smell: Medium-strength malty beer smell with a hint of, yes, sweet potato.

Taste: You know those food shows where they’re talking about molecular gastronomy and those foams, and the host of the show tastes one of the foams and says something like “this tastes exactly like steak”? Well, this was a similar experience.

This is probably the weirdest beer I have tried, because it is as advertised, in that it actually tastes like a sweet potato casserole. Like legit sweet potato flavor. It’s bizarre.

This is the least-disturbing GIF I could find using the search term “weird”. The dog appears to be a Bichon-Frise.

So that taste prevails, and is accompanied by some malt-iness. It’s a thick beer, with medium-high gas content. Not watery, but not refreshing or easy to drink because it’s just too weird and thick. In fact, after a while, it’s just so odd that it gets hard to swallow.

That said, this is actually a quality beer. It’s well made and delivers on its promise of sweet potato casserole taste. Go figure.

Hangover Factor: Nothing unusual. I’m a male in reasonably good health born in 1983.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been looking for a beer that tastes like a sweet potato casserole, the Funky Buddha Sweet Potato Casserole will not disappoint. It is really expensive though, so if I buy it again, it’ll be for the novelty factor.
