Caveman Beer Reviews: Wynwood Brewing La Rubia

Note: This is a series I call Caveman Beer Reviews, because I like to drink beer but am a caveman when it comes to beer knowledge. I know only the basics, and do not have a refined palate. I’ll review the beers on price and what they look, smell, and taste like to me.

Beer: Wynwood Brewing La Rubia

Bottom Line: A light-tasting, pretty good beer that’s a little sour, but also a little sweet.

Price: About $9.99 for a 6-pack of 12 ounce bottles.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

So I decided to pick up this beer because it’s from my home city of Miami, and because it seemed interesting enough. Wynwood is a cool, artsy neighborhood in the Magic City, while La Rubia means “the blonde one” in Spanish. This, plus the fact that I liked Wynwood Brewing’s Pop’s Porter, was enough to convince me to give it a try.

A Wynwood mural

Origin: Miami, Florida

Alcohol: 5.0%

Looks: A dark glass standard beer bottle with simple labeling. The beer itself is a yellow or slightly orange color.

Smell: Light malty beer smell.

Taste: I found La Rubia to have a somewhat unique taste, in that it was slightly sour, but also slightly sweet, with light citrus/lemon notes. It did not have very strong flavors overall, and was somewhat watery.

It was medium-gaseous, and relatively refreshing and easy to drink.

In all, this is a pretty decent, light-tasting brew. It’s not bad, but it’s nothing special, either.

Hangover Factor: Nothing unusual. I’m a male in reasonably good health born in 1983.

Final Thoughts

For what you get in terms of taste, this beer is simply too expensive. It’s somewhat unique in that you get sweetness and sourness in the same bottle, but it’s just not pleasing enough to justify spending essentially $10 on just six bottles.

Live it up, spend less.
