Caveman Beer Reviews: Coppertail Brewing Co. Unholy Trippel

unholy trippel

Note: This is a series I call Caveman Beer Reviews, because I like to drink beer but am a caveman when it comes to beer knowledge. I know only the basics, and do not have a refined palate. I’ll review the beers on price and what they look, smell, and taste like to me.

Beer: Coppertail Brewing Co. Unholy Trippel

Bottom Line: A great beer for those that like brews that are strong and sour, but not too much.

Price: About $10.99 for a 6-pack of 12 ounce bottles.

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

I don’t even remember where I got this, though I reckon it was probably Trader Joe’s. I bought it out of curiosity alone, because it’s got a pretty awesome label – I certainly did not buy it because of an expected great taste, since I have no clue what a trippel is. Nonetheless, it looked so cool that I had to have it.

Origin: Tampa, FL.

Tampa. I have no idea what that pointy thing is…

Alcohol: 9.2%. That’s almost wine!

Looks: A really funky dark glass beer bottle with a drawing of a monk and some mice hanging around on barrels floating in a body of water. Whatever it means, it looks cool.

The beer itself is an opaque, orange-yellow color.

Smell: Strong-ish malt smell, with some sourness.

Taste: So this beer is like a great contradiction. It’s really sour, but a pleasant kind of sour. There’s little (if any) malt taste; it’s just a scrumptiously sour brew.

Although the sourness lingers on the sides of the tongue (at least my tongue), it remains relatively refreshing and easy to drink, for a strong-flavored beer.

Other than that, it’s got some citrus (orange) notes, and a medium gas level.

Hangover Factor: Nothing unusual. I’m a male in reasonably good health born in 1983.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I’d say the Unholy Trippel is a sinfully delicious beer, though really expensive. It’s sour, but a great kind of sour; have it at night while contemplating some bad behavior.

Live it up, spend less.

OH dude! Loves me a good Trippel. Even better, a nice Quad. Sadly, my inflammatory sensitivities keep me at arm’s length from high gluten beer these days. Love the new series. I can at least enjoy READING about good beer… 🙂

Thanks Cubert! I didn’t even know that all these flavors could exist in beers before I started doing the reviews. I get to have fun and learn all the time!
